Carl Hart and Melissa Harris Perry at Politics & Prose

January 14, 2021 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm EST

In Dr. Hart’s myth-shattering and thought-provoking new book, Drug Use for Grown-Ups , Hart argues that the criminalization and demonization of drug use is causing much more harm in America than the drugs themselves. Hart is also open about his own drug use, done in a happy balance with the rest of his full and productive life.

Drug Use for Grown-Ups will be controversial, to be sure: it challenges head-on some of our strongest moral reflexes about drugs and citizenship. As Hart argues, the nexus of special interests that benefit from drug criminalization have waged a very effective propaganda campaign. But the facts are clear. In every country with a more permissive and humane drug policy, all human outcomes are better, from mortality to addiction to overall quality of life. We have a long way to go, but the vital conversation this book will generate is an extraordinarily important step.

Hart will be in conversation with Melissa Harris-Perry, the Maya Angelou Presidential Chair and Professor in the Department of Politics and International Affairs and the Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Wake Forest University. She is founder and president of the Anna Julia Cooper Center and a long time columnist and contributor to The Nation. She is also the co-host of The Nation’s System Check podcast and previously hosted the television show Melissa Harris-Perry.
