Carl L. Hart and Carla Shedd at California African-American Museum

January 12, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm PST

In his new book, Drug Use For Grown-Ups: Chasing Liberty in the Land of Fear, Carl L. Hart, the Ziff Professor of Psychology in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry at Columbia University, argues that the greatest damage from drugs flows from their being illegal. Hart draws on decades of research and his own personal experience to argue that the criminalization and demonization of drug use–not drugs themselves–have been a tremendous scourge on America, not least in reinforcing this country’s enduring structural racism. Listen in as Hart discusses this controversial position with sociologist and award-winning author, Carla Shedd. RSVP for Zoom instructions.
